Brissy's Bean Magazine Release Sun-Drenched EP

Brisbane-based indie-rock trio Bean Magazine has released their new EP, In The Shade. This sun-drenched collection features seven tracks, produced by Sam Cromack of Ball Park Music. It includes recent singles like 'Old Or Young', 'Chicken', '3', 'Nobody Wore Shoes', and 'FIRE', alongside two fresh songs, 'Don’t You Die' and 'The Weather'.

The band—comprising Henry Creamer (guitar and vocals), Gabrielle Beiers (drums), and Seb Baren (bass)—seamlessly fuses punk energy, poignant lyrics, and classic rock riffs, crafting catchy tunes that you'll find hard to forget.

Currently, Bean Magazine is on a national tour supporting The Rubens, set to captivate audiences this September and October across Tasmania, Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Canberra, Adelaide, and Perth. Last month, they toured regional Queensland with Rum Jungle and received enthusiastic feedback at BIGSOUND in Brisbane.

Henry and Seb from Bean Mag caught up for a chat with resident journo Pipin a couple of weeks back over Zoom to chat about the new EP, BIGSOUND adventures, recording new songs, touring, and custard.

Hello! It is Pipin and I am talking to Bean Magazine for Livewire! It’s post Bigsound, you guys are about to head on another tour and you’re about to release a new EP called ‘In The Shade’. How are you going? How are you feeling? What’s going on?

We are really good. In the process of recording a new song right now. Gab is in on the drums and yeah feeling really really good.

That is so good! I mean it seems like the music never stops because you folks are so prolific with your writing. You’ve got a whole bunch of songs on the new EP that we have already heard and already love, but you’ve also got a couple of new tracks on there. How was it deciding what the track listing was going to be like for the new EP?

We’ve always wanted to have ‘Nobody Wore Shoes’, ‘Fire’ and ‘Chicken’ - those are our 3 songs that we’ve had for a long time and we’ve always wanted to have them on some project, so that was pretty easy to choose and pick them for the record. I guess whatever feels natural is generally the way we go. Just pretty easy breezy. There’s not as much thought, and maybe that sounds bad, but I don’t think we try to be too precious with it. We love the creative side of it and if it flows then that’s the best outcome for us.

I think that comes across when you perform because you’re not only such a high energy band, but you also seem so relaxed and you create such a beautiful, fun and safe space for the people who are watching you play. I saw you at Tomcat when you were doing your Bigsound shows last week and it was so packed, we were little sardine people all squished in together. It was so nice! Is there a special pre-show ritual you have to get that energy going before hopping up onstage?

We had a bit of a stint there where we were into Baileys, which is maybe not the greatest, but it warms the throat up (...so maybe a little glass of that!). I don’t know, there’s no real ritual, we tend to write our setlist pretty last minute before we play.

Tell me how you’re feeling about your upcoming tour with The Rubens, because you’re about to launch into that now.

It’s pretty surreal. I mean, we get to play some massive venues. Ones that we’ve wanted from the start to tick off the bucket list I guess. We are super keen about it.

BM Seb: There’s a lot of venues there that I’ve always wanted to just attend. Like with the Enmore, I’ve always just wanted to go in and see it, but the first time doing that will be playing it which is whack.

Let’s come back to the EP, just briefly before I let you guys go. Where’d the concept for the title ‘Into The Shade’ come from? Is it sort of going with that easy breezy feeling that you were talking about before with creativity flowing for the work to come together.

BM Henry: Yeah, let’s go with that! That works! It’s actually lyrics, but we might go with that answer from now on. But yeah, it’s my personal favourite lyric off the EP. It’s on a song called ‘Don’t You Die’, which is also a song that we love from the record.

That is so good! Well, I’m going to let you go because you’re literally recording more music right now. We can’t wait to hear more beautiful stuff from Bean Mag. Just finally, if Bean Magazine was a drink, what drink do you think it would be?

Oh at the present, Baileys.

Hahah just a milky creamy beverage. I do personally love Baileys with a sachet of chai. It tastes like Christmas.

BM Henry: That’s a good shout! Actually, I want to change our answer to a milkshake with Baileys in it.

BM Seb: Is custard a drink?

BM Henry: Oh custard would be up there too.

Custard is one of those things where it’s a food and it’s a drink and that’s why it’s good. What’s it trying to be? It doesn’t know and it can’t be put in a box.

Yeah let’s not try and put it in a box. We retract that as an answer as it’s neither a drink or a food, it’s in its own world.

It is in its own third category of deliciousness. This has been wonderfully chaotic and incredible and thank you so much for your time and talking to me and have the best day!

You can stream ‘In The Shade’ everywhere now. Best listened to with a glass of Baileys or custard.
