LAZY GHOST Drop Summery Surf-Rock EP 'SARAH-TONIN'

Updated: Jun 27

LAZY GHOST’s new EP SARAH-TONIN feels like the soundtrack to a coastal road trip montage, with strong influence from mod-rock legends The Jam shining through. Produced and mixed by Jack Nigro, these songs will shift you into a summery mood, featuring guitar hooks that oscillate between feel-good pentatonic melodies and riffs that could be out of an old Western, tom-driven drum lines made for dancing barefoot in the sand, and an overall of a surf-rock vibe.

LAZY GHOST give some insight into the EP: "'SARAH-TONIN', pronounced - serotonin - is a reminder to savour the rider beers and not to fret and stress about the venue forgetting to pay the band. The chase of success is often at the cost of 'Sarah', our friend and favourite neurotransmitter. 'Sarah' transports you to good times whenever she's feelin' agreeable but also stitches you up, leaving you high and dry as soon as you chase her.”

Track 1, ‘ONLY MAN IN TOWN’, could easily be off the soundtrack to a Western, and would pair well with the Stealers Wheel discography. The song ambles with the swagger of a cowboy gait but keeps your attention with double-time rhythms sprinkled throughout the vocal line, sometimes followed by the drums.

Track 2, ‘PARK HOTEL’, is infused with feel-good, nostalgic vibes; this is the track that first brought me to draw parallels with The Jam.

Track 3, ‘WEEKEND’, is maybe my favourite off the EP, and continues to lean into the mod-rock influences. It also feels like someone has commissioned Blur x Declan McKenna to write a ‘Wipeout’-inspired tune. The triplet/swung breakdowns are a nice surprise; you can never go wrong with a pirate-rock moment.

Track 4, ‘EAT YOU ALIVE’, is raw, innocent, care-free, and loaded with sing-along "da da da"s. It’s a moment of exaltation for the EP, encouraging you to don the rose-coloured glasses and take a gander down memory lane.

The final track, ‘OLD FRIEND OF MINE’ is the source of the EP title, crooning of longing for “Sarah” (tonin), the vocals cocooned in dreamy reverb.

"Sarah, I want you, I need you, I need you"
