LivewireAU's Six Pack: Catch Up On The Best Of Aussie Music This Week

Fri-yay is here and so is your weekly dose of fresh Australian music! This week's crop of new singles features electronic/pop jams, a heartfelt ballad, a punk rock banger and a COVID-19 diatribe. Whatever the vibe, they're all essential listening, just in time for your weekend. Enjoy these six brand new songs from some of Australia's finest!

LASHES - The Island

'The Island' starts out like a moody pop song before exploding into an anthemic chorus. The impressive production allows those vocals to shine through, enhanced by the use of some incredibly creative vocal effects. Lovely vivid lyrics, with some nice imagery of cities, islands and oceans.

Lachlan Edwards - With Me

The Unearthed High star in the making belts out this lovestruck number that would be equally at home on both mainstream and alternative radio. The passionate vocal performance really makes this stand out from many of the folk/pop singer-songwriters out there today.

King George - Oh Well

This one sounds and feels like it came straight out of a garage in California in the mid 90s. King George embody the spirit of the likes of Jawbreaker and early Green Day in this punk/emo banger. Energetic and unapologetic, the Brisbane trio channel their youthful exuberance into a tight, head-banging ear-worm.

Mia Rodriguez - BEAUTIFUL & BITTERSWEET

This 18-year old from Sydney could just be Australia's next big star. With catchy melodies, clean production and crisp vocals, 'BEAUTIFUL & BITTERSWEET' is pop perfection. Try getting this one out of your head. I know I won't be able to for a long time. That is, until she drops her next single.

Ukiyo - The Middle

Enlisting the help of singer-songwriter/producer Panama on his latest single, Ukiyo creates a summery EDM/pop jam. With subtle synths and percussion and floaty vocals, it's not too in-your-face, just more of a laidback, relaxing vibe that perfectly matches a warm summer's day. I can see this one playing on a sunset drive home from a beach trip with a bunch of mates, windows down, hair blowing in the wind, and smiles all around.

MF Tomlinson - Everything Is Cancelled

You may remember him as Yves Klein Blue and Many Things frontman, but former Brisbane lad Michael Tomlinson is quietly doing his own thing over in London, writing songs in lockdown to follow up the solo debut EP he dropped earlier this year. If the title doesn't give it away, this latest track is a satirical COVID-19 themed ditty, and it features a quirky horn arrangement to add colour to its witty lyrics. This is one we can all relate to at the moment. He's also donating all proceeds from the track on Bandcamp to help out venues during the pandemic, so it's a great song for a great cause.
