Young Singer-Songwriter Ruel returns with his first solo music since 2019 with ‘as long as you care’ along with announcing his upcoming third EP titled Bright Lights, Red Eyes set to release next month.
The 17-year-old has proven to be one of Australia’s promising artists with his mature lyrics and smooth vocal ability. It’s no different on this latest track as he takes these elements to another level.
The song feels like it’s straight out of the 1970s with its pulsating bass line and wavy guitar riffs. Along with Ruel’s smooth and buttery voice, it’s a match made in psychedelic heaven. We even saw this emulated in the song’s music video where Ruel is walking around a 70s inspired house while different commercial tropes are played on the television.
It’s all very true to Ruel’s usual style but where this song truly shines is the lyrics. He talks about missing someone which may sound typical, but the way he weaves metaphors throughout the song is just a testament to his growth and maturity as a songwriter.
If a new single wasn’t enough for you, the youngster also announced his upcoming EP and the best thing is, you don’t have to wait long for it. Speaking on Triple J this morning, Ruel says that he wrote the entire thing in Paris last year but wants to make it known that the EP is more like a time capsule.
“This project isn’t who I am right now, as I wrote these songs last year, but it’s the most mature you’ve ever heard me and it was me, in that moment in time. The songs I’m writing now will be more mature again, and I love that my fans can come on this journey with me as I grow.”
Well his fans won’t have to wait long as the EP drops next month. Until then, they have ‘as long as you care’ to devour. If this track is anything to go by, Bright Lights, Red Eyes is sure to be one of his best.
