Telenova Strike Gold On Debut Single 'Bones'

It's not often that a new group pops up out of nowhere and absolutely knocks it out of the park with their very first release, but Telenova is more than just your ordinary band.

Assembled by Chris Walla (Death Cab for Cutie) at an APRA SongHubs writing camp in early 2020, the Melbourne-based three-piece boast an impressive wealth of musical talent and experience. With the grand vocals of frontwoman Angeline Armstrong alongside multi-instrumentalist/producers Edward Quinn (Slum Sociable) and Joshua Moriarty (Miami Horror), Telenova create a sound that isn't bound by genre, combining a host of influences but still sounding fresh and unique.

The group has just signed to Remote Control Records' new label imprint Pointer Recordings, an announcement that coincided with the release of this debut single.

'Bones' is a stunning introduction to the three-piece's talents and chemistry as a group. Armstrong sings a narrative about "melancholia and longing, a girl trapped in her own bones…her own disillusionment".

This story begins over a rattling percussive intro, reminiscent of "rattling bones", before evolving throughout a disco-influenced beat and a soaring chorus. Armstrong's vocals evoke the swagger of Lana Del Rey as they transpose between moody verses and an anthemic hook.

"I was dreaming of blue skies in California while you were loading your gun"

It all comes together for an unforgettable track. The songwriting is pop perfection, while the instrumentals and production blur the lines between the funky energy of Khurangbin and Unknown Mortal Orchestra and the melancholic trip-hop stylings of Massive Attack and Portishead.

Fans of the likes of Weyes Blood, Karen O and Alexandra Savior will also be drawn to the elegant yet powerful vocal performances. And if you're a bit torn up about Slum Sociable's recently announced split, Edward Quinn's new project should fill that hole in your heart quite nicely.

Telenova will support the new single with upcoming shows at Lansdowne Hotel in Sydney and Northcote Social Club in Melbourne, following on from two sold out shows at the Colour Club in Melbourne last week.
