The Paper Kites Release ‘Hurts So Good’, Announce New Album

Today Melbourne / Naarm’s The Paper Kites have announced their upcoming sixth studio album At The Roadhouse, which will be released on the 1st of September.

The announcement came alongside the third single from the project, ‘Hurts So Good’, and accompanying music video by cinematographer Keiren Watson-Bonnice.

At the Roadhouse is a wonderfully intimate album, decidedly marked by the time and space it was created in. It’s a homecoming in a way, recorded and performed so far solely in a local Victorian setting.

The band arrived in the small town of Campbells Creek to enquire about a roadside property in July 2022, with a vision of transforming the space and creating a hub of community and music while they worked on their album.

“We wanted it to be a combination of all the greatest dive bars you’d ever been to, late-night watering holes, smoky taverns, biker bars - but it didn’t exist, so we had to build it, and then we had to try and fill it” - Sam Bentley.

They stayed in this property at Campbells Creek for a month, transforming the space into an intimate venue while setting up an all-analogue studio in the barn behind.

During the weeks, they worked on the new album, and on Friday and Saturday nights, they would perform this new music. The shows were completely free and unannounced, relying simply on word-of-mouth in the small town. A powerful sense of community soon emerged within the intimate crowds that gathered weekly.

As is the case with ‘Hurts so Good’ and previous singles from At The Roadhouse, a live performance video from the Campbells Creek residency will be released for each track from the album.
